Asphalt overlay is an ingenious paving method that introduces a fresh layer of asphalt to any surface that shows signs of deterioration.
Instead of removing the existing asphalt layer in its entirety, the overlay makes use of the current layers as the base for the new pavement.
However, if your asphalt surface has significant damage in the form of large cracks, expansions, potholes, and rutting, you need to have it milled before applying the overlay.

What Are The Basic Steps Followed When Applying Overlays?
1. Assessment of the Existing Asphalt
An overlay can only be applied if the existing asphalt meets certain criteria. If widespread damage has affected the structure of the pavement, some measures will have to be taken before applying the overlay.
Significant flaws such as root damage, grooves on the surface, and enormous potholes can only be repaired if the entire structure is torn apart.
Any asphalt structures that have poor drainage make it difficult to install asphalt overlay. Before introducing the overlay, the surface needs to be regraded so that water can run off easily.
2. Asphalt Milling
Asphalt milling is the process of eliminating the upper layer of a surface that has significant raveling, cracks, or other forms of damage.
If the old layer is not removed, the new asphalt may bond poorly with the damaged surface, making the pavement uneven.
Depending on the extent of wear and tear, the milling machine extracts 1 to 3 inches of the upper layer by grinding it down. The material extracted in this process is transported to a recycling plant to convert it into new asphalt mix.
3. Base Repair
You may need to replace the base of your asphalt surface if it has sunk in some regions or has large potholes. It’s necessary to address all critical issues to ensure that problems won’t arise after a short time.
The base of the surface is rebuilt using several lifts of asphalt and aggregate.
4. Paving The Surface
After the existing asphalt is prepared adequately, the construction team can carry out the process of adding the asphalt overlay on the top layer.
The amount of overlay is determined by the height of the existing surface. Normally, the thickness of the overlay lies between 1.5 and 2 inches.
